How to Make Oreo Cream Cheese Balls

Line two baking trays with parchment and set them aside.

Place Oreo cookies in a food processor or high speed blender and pulse crushed cookies into fine crumbs.

In a large bowl with a hand mixer on high speed, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.

Add the Oreo crumbs to the bowl and mix on medium speed until well combined.

Using a 1.5” small cookie scoop, scoop up even sized balls and then roll it in the palms of your hands to make it smooth. Place the rolled balls on the prepared baking trays (cookie sheet or parchment paper), in even amounts.

Once you are done making balls, place the trays into the refrigerator to chill for 2 hours. If you are short on time, you can freeze the balls for 15-20 minutes.

Remove one tray of the prepared balls from the refrigerator.

In a double boiler over low heat (or use a microwave safe bowl and microwave on low setting), melt the blue candy melts, stirring every 30 seconds until fully melted chocolate is smooth.

Use a fork to dip one ball at a time completely into the blue melts. Lift the fork and tap it to help remove any excess coating. Place the ball back onto the baking tray and immediately sprinkle with the white star confetti. Place the coated blue Oreo balls into the refrigerator for the coating to finish setting.

Remove the second tray of the rolled balls from the refrigerator.

Using a clean double boiler on low heat, melt the red candy melts, stirring every 30 seconds until fully melted and smooth.

Use a fork to dip each ball completely into the red melts to coat it then lift the fork and tap it to remove any excess coating. Place the ball back onto the prepared baking sheet . Repeat with the remaining balls.

Using a small piping bag, microwave ⅓ cup white melting wafers in 30 second increments until melted. Massage the bag at each interval to ensure it heats evenly for best results.

Snip a small piece of the tip off the end and drizzle white lines over the red coated Oreo balls. Return the balls to the refrigerator for the coating to finish setting for 10 minutes.

Keep refrigerated until ready to eat. Enjoy!

Tips for Best Patriotic Oreo Balls

Use a food processor to crush the Oreos. This will save you time and effort. If you don’t have a food processor, put the Oreos in a plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin or the bottom of a heavy glass.

Soften the cream cheese before mixing it with the Oreos. This will make it easier to combine the two ingredients and create a smooth mixture.

Chill the truffles before dipping them in chocolate or candy melts. This will help them hold their shape and prevent them from falling apart in the coating.

Use a toothpick or fork to dip the truffles in the coating. This will make it easier to coat them evenly and prevent your fingers from getting messy.

Decorate the truffles with sprinkles or other toppings while the coating is still wet. This will help the toppings stick to the truffles.

Variations

Use different flavors of Oreos to create different color combinations. For example, use golden Oreos for a red, white, and gold theme or red velvet Oreos for a red, white, and pink theme.

Add food coloring to the cream cheese mixture to create different colors. For example, add blue food coloring for a red, white, and blue theme or red food coloring for a red, white, and pink theme.

Use different types of chocolate or candy melts for the coating. For example, use white chocolate for a red, white, and blue theme or dark chocolate for a more sophisticated look.

Experiment with different toppings, such as crushed candy canes for a Christmas theme or chopped nuts for a fall theme.

Overall, making patriotic Oreo truffles is a fun and easy way to celebrate any patriotic holiday or occasion. With these tips and variations, you can customize the truffles to your liking and impress your friends and family with your creativity.

How to Store Oreo Balls

Refrigerate: Store your truffles covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. This will help them stay firm and prevent them from melting or becoming too soft.

Freeze: If you want to store your truffles for longer, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. To freeze, place the truffles in an airtight container or freezer bag and make sure they are well-covered. When you’re ready to enjoy them, let them thaw in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving.

Avoid Moisture: Moisture is the enemy of truffles, as it can cause them to become mushy or lose their shape. Make sure to store your truffles in a dry environment, and avoid placing them near any sources of moisture or humidity.

Separate Layers: If you’re storing your truffles in a container, make sure to separate single layer with wax paper or parchment paper. This will help prevent them from sticking together and maintain their shape.

Avoid Heat: Heat can cause the chocolate coating on your truffles to melt or become soft, so it’s important to store them in a cool place. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or near any sources of heat, such as a stove or oven.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your patriotic Oreo truffles stay fresh and delicious for as long as possible.

Overall, Patriotic Oreo Truffles are a fun and delicious treat that everyone will love. They are easy to make, customizable, and easy to transport. Whether you are celebrating the July 4th, Memorial Day, or any other patriotic occasion, these truffles are sure to be a hit. Serve them along with these favorite July 4th sugar cookies and everyone will rave about them

Notes

  • You can use any flavor of Oreos with this recipe. Just be sure to use the correct amount, about 45 regular sized cookies. Using less cookies or double or mega stuff cookies with more cream will result in extra soft and wet Oreo balls. I find that using a Family Size package of regular Oreo cookies produces balls that hold its shape well.
  • If you can’t find white star confetti at your local store, you can purchase it online at Amazon. You can also opt to use white nonpareils or sugar pearls.
  • I prefer using the double boiler method when melting my candy melts. It helps to keep it a thin consistency, perfect for coating. Be sure to keep it on a low heat to avoid the melts seizing and clumping.
