  • rolled oats
  • all purpose/ plain flour
  • brown sugar
  • ground cinnamon
  • butter, chopped in small pieces or grated
  • sliced almonds
  • Vanilla ice-cream, to serve

  • brown sugar
  • unsalted butter
  • heavy cream
  • vanilla essence

How to Make Stuffed Baked Apple Recipe

Step 1 – Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Using an apple corer, carefully remove the core from each apple. Then, with a small sharp knife, trim a small part from the top of each apple to create a lid. Make two horizontal slits around each apple, ensuring not to cut all the way through. Place the prepared apples in a baking dish.

Step 2 – In a small bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon. Add the cold diced butter and use your fingertips to rub the butter into the oat mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped almonds and toss to combine.

Step 3 – Spoon the oat mixture evenly among the apples, filling the centers. Any extra crumble mixture can be sprinkled over the top of each apple for added texture.

Step 4 – Bake the stuffed apples in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the apples are tender and the crumble topping is golden brown.

Step 5 – While the apples are baking, prepare the butterscotch sauce. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar and unsalted butter. Stir continuously for about 10 minutes or until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes smooth and caramelized. Gradually pour in the heavy cream and add the vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture as it boils for another 10 minutes or until the sauce thickens slightly.

Step 6 – Once the baked apples are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Then, divide the apple crisps among serving plates. Drizzle each apple with the luscious butterscotch sauce, and serve immediately with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. You can replace the butterscotch sauce with caramel sauce, or apple cider sauce or apple juice

FAQ

What are the Best Types of Apples for Baked Apple Crisp?

The best types of apples for baked apple crisp are those that hold their shape well during baking and offer a good balance of sweet and tart flavors. Popular choices include Granny Smith apples, which provide a delightful tartness, and Honey Crisp apples, known for their sweet and juicy nature. Gala apples also work well, offering a pleasant sweetness. For a more complex flavor profile, you can even mix different types of apples in your recipe.

Can I Make Individual Apple Crisps Instead of Stuffed Apples?

Yes, you can definitely make individual apple crisps instead of stuffed apples. Instead of using whole apples, simply peel and dice the apples into small pieces, and then distribute the apple crisp filling and crumble topping into individual ramekins or oven-safe dishes. Bake them until the tops are golden brown and the apples are tender. Individual apple crisps are a great way to serve the dessert for a dinner party or family gathering.

Can I Use Different Types of Sugar for the Crisp Filling?

Certainly! The crisp filling can be customized to suit your taste preferences. While brown sugar is the traditional choice for its rich flavor, you can experiment with other sugars like granulated sugar, coconut sugar, or even maple syrup. Each type of sugar will impart a slightly different taste to the filling, so feel free to choose the one that best complements your chosen apples and desired level of sweetness.

How Do I Know When the Apples are Properly Baked?

Properly baked apples should be tender but not mushy. To test their doneness, insert a fork or a paring knife into the thickest part of the apple. If it slides in easily with little resistance, the apples are ready. Be cautious not to overbake, as this can cause the apples to lose their shape and become too soft.

Can I Use Coconut Oil Instead of Butter in the Crumble Topping?

Yes, you can substitute coconut oil for butter in the crumble topping. Coconut oil adds a subtle coconut flavor to the topping and works well for those who prefer a dairy-free option. To make the substitution, use the same amount of solid coconut oil as the butter called for in the recipe. Keep in mind that the texture and flavor may vary slightly from using traditional butter.

How Long Can I Store Leftover Baked Apples?

Leftover baked apples can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Make sure the apples are completely cooled before storing to prevent condensation. When reheating, use the oven or microwave until the apples are warmed through, and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful treat.

What is the Best Way to Reheat Baked Apple Crisp?

To reheat baked apple crisp, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Place the leftover apple crisp on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Reheat in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the topping becomes crispy again and the filling is warmed through.

Alternatively, you can reheat individual servings in the microwave for a quicker option. Enjoy the comforting flavors of your baked apple crisp once again!

This perfect dessert is a perfect way to celebrate the season and explore the myriad flavors of different apple varieties. Whether it’s a comforting treat for yourself or a crowd-pleasing addition to a family gathering, this recipe is sure to become a cherished part of your fall traditions.

With the warm, tender apples, the crispy oat topping, and the indulgent butterscotch drizzle, it’s a dessert that captures the essence of autumn in every bite.
