Hello everyone!
Yesterday morning I was set to make an Argentinian dessert with Dulce De Leche. I had planned everything and here I was setting off to buy some Dulce de Leche from my local shops and start on my dessert. HA! I wanted to take the easy way and buy the key ingredient….hahaha! There is no such thing for me 🙂 Can you believe that I was not able to find a jar of Dulce de Leche in my area????
My head started spinning…what was I going to do? There was no plan B, I did not expect this at all. So, walking through the aisles, I have decided I will stick to my plan {the only one I had} and if there is no Dulce de Leche already made and displayed in a jar, I will not give up and go home and make my own…. Little did I know at that time about making Dulce de Leche 🙂
Almost 4 hours later, I was able to get that glossy, really dark, delicious Dulce de Leche. I know that usually the color is much lighter but I really like my caramel dark, so dark it’s almost to the point of getting burnt. Don’t worry, I didn’t burn this one 🙂 By the time I have finished everything was too late for my dessert recipe, so for today I made just Dulce de Leche. I have used the old, classical way, where you put all the ingredients on the stove top and you start praying that at one point, they will all thicken and you will not get a gritty mixture in the end. A spoon of it and you are in heaven!
Dulce De Leche
Ingredients
- 5 cups milk
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 1 and 1/3 cups white sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, bring milk to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove from heat and strain through. Return to pan.
- Stir in the sugar and vanilla essence and place the pan on medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is dissolved. Just as the milk mixture begins to boil, stir in the baking soda. Reduce the heat to low-medium, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. When a wooden spoon drawn through the mixture leaves the bottom of the pan visible, and the mixture is brown in color, remove the pan from the heat. Pour into sterile jars, and store in the refrigerator.
- Enjoy!!!

Hi! I am from Venezuela and we call "Arequipe" to Dulce de Leche.. My mom has the easiest way of making "arequipe" (or dulce de leche) and you just put a condensed milk in a pot with water until it covers the can, and take it to boil for 45min-1hr. Let it cool, and when you open the can you'll have the delicious light brown sweet.
