How to Make Thanksgiving Turkey Oreo Cookies

Melting the Chocolate

Start by melting ½ cup of dark chocolate melting wafers in a microwave-safe bowl. Use the low or defrost setting, heating in 30-second intervals. Stir the chocolate after each interval to ensure it melts evenly and becomes smooth. Once melted, set it aside to cool slightly for a few minutes.

Preparing the Cookies

Line a baking tray or board with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Next, easily separate cookies and place them on top of the prepared surface.

Assembling the Turkeys

Working in small batches of 4-6 cookies at a time, add a small amount of the melted chocolate near the top of half of the cookies. This ensures the chocolate doesn’t set before you’re ready to decorate.

For the turkey feathers, place 5 candy corn pieces on top of each cookie, arranging them like feathers. Gently press down to secure the candy corn in place. If needed, add a bit more melted chocolate to help everything stick together.

Once the feathers are in place, put the remaining cookie halves on top, creating your turkey’s body.

Adding the Details

Start creating the turkey face. To create the turkey’s eyes, use the back of a skewer (or a lollipop stick) to dab a bit of chocolate onto the top cookie.

Immediately press candy eyeballs onto the chocolate, one by one, ensuring they stick. Repeat this step for all your prepared Oreo turkeys.

For the beak, dip the skewer into the melted chocolate again and dab just below the eyes.

Quickly place a halved Reese’s Pieces on the chocolate dab, forming the turkey’s beak. Repeat this step for each turkey.

Using red decorative icing, pipe a small line on one side of the beak to represent the turkey’s wattle, or snood.

Final Touches

Once all your turkeys are assembled, transfer them to the refrigerator to set. Let the chocolate firm up before serving. Enjoy your adorable and delicious Oreo turkey treats!

Serving Suggestions

To present your Oreo Turkeys appealingly, I recommend arranging them on a large platter. Make sure to space them evenly so each adorable turkey gets its moment in the spotlight. For an added festive touch, consider using decorative paper or a vibrant tablecloth that complements the Thanksgiving theme.

I often sprinkle colorful candy corn around the turkeys, mimicking autumn leaves or fields of pumpkins. Using small signs or labels can also enhance the display, differentiating the flavors or fun facts about the cookies.

Storing Oreo Turkeys

To keep my Oreo Turkeys fresh after I’ve decorated them, I use an airtight container. This prevents air exposure, helping them maintain their soft texture. I line the container with parchment paper to avoid sticking, making removal easier later.

If I plan to store them for more than a day, I often refrigerate them. Chilling slows down any potential spoilage, especially in warmer climates. When ready to serve, I let them sit for a few minutes at room temperature; this helps regain their original softness. I also ensure they are away from strong odors to preserve their flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time does it take to prepare and decorate one batch of Thanksgiving Oreo Turkeys?

Preparing and decorating a batch of Oreo Turkey Cookies typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. This includes the time needed to assemble the cookies, melt any chocolate or icing, and add decorations like candy eyes and candy corn.

Are there any variations to the classic Oreo Turkey design for different skill levels?

Yes, there are several variations for different skill levels. Beginners can stick to the basic design with just Oreos and candy corn, while more advanced decorators can incorporate additional elements like fondant or royal icing to create detailed features and decorations.

What can I use as a substitute if I don’t have candy corn for the feathers?

If candy corn isn’t available, you can use alternatives like assorted small candies, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips or even fruit gummies. These can add color and sweetness while still allowing for a creative twist on the traditional design.

Is it possible to make Easy Oreo Turkeys with dietary restrictions in mind, such as gluten-free or vegan?

Absolutely. For gluten-free options, look for gluten-free Oreos or similar cookies. For vegan versions, use vegan cookies and plant-based red icing. Many candies are also available in vegan forms, ensuring that everyone can enjoy these festive treats.

Ingredients

  • 24 24 Oreos (any flavor, Regular or Double Stuf)

  • 120 pieces 120 candy corn

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 dark chocolate melting wafers

  • 48 48 candy eyeballs

  • Orange Reese’s Pieces, cut in half

  • Red cookie icing

Directions

  • In a microwave safe bowl, melt ½ cup dark chocolate melting wafers on a low or defrost setting in 30-second increments until smooth. Stir at each interval to ensure even heating. Set aside and allow to cool for a few minutes.
  • Line a baking tray or board with parchment paper and then carefully separate the Oreo cookies and place on top.
  • Add a little melted chocolate towards the top on half of the cookies. I recommend working in small batches of 4-6 cookies at a time so that the chocolate does not set before you are done decorating.
  • Arrange 5 candy corn pieces on top for the turkey’s feathers and gently press down to help it stick. You can add just a little more chocolate on top if needed to help keep everything held together.
  • Put the remaining cookie halves on top of the feathers.
  • Use the back of a skewer to dip into the melted chocolate and dab just a little on the cookie for the eyes.
  • Immediately place the candy eyeballs on top and gently press down to help it stick. Repeat putting the eyes on the rest of the prepared Oreos.
  • Dip the skewer into the melted chocolate again and dab underneath the two eyes for the beak.
  • Immediately place a Reese’s Pieces half on top. Repeat with the rest of the prepared Oreos.
  • Pipe the red decorative icing towards one of the sides for the beak for the turkey’s wattle or snood.
  • Transfer the prepared Oreo turkeys to the refrigerator to set before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Any flavor Oreos will work with this recipe. You can use Regular or Double Stuf varieties. I find that Mega Stuf has too much cream and will spill out when pressing the candy corn in.
  • Instead of dark chocolate melting wafers, you can melt semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips or even white chocolate chips.
  • Instead of Reese’s Pieces for the beak, you can also use M&Ms or a chocolate chip or even a peanut butter chip. You can also cut the tips off the candy corn and use that if you don’t want to have to buy additional ingredients.
  • Instead of cookie icing to make the wattle or snood, you can use melted red candy wafers or red frosting. Place into a piping bag and cut just a small piece of the tip and pipe it on. If using candy melts, be sure to let it cool a bit before piping as if it’s too hot, it will spill out too quickly.
